Abstract

This work is a comparative reading of Shakespeare’s play Titus Andronicus and its rewriting Matar a Rómulo by Luis Barrales. The aim is to uncover the main aspects of the hypotext following the common thread of violence as the historical substratum in the construction of the political project of Western civilization. The motifs of revenge, the construction of the Other, and historical violence are analysed to establish that the revisionary writing of Skakespeare’s play by Luis Barrales has as its thesis that the beginning of the civilizational problems are the crime against and the fear of the Other.
