Abstract

In 1988, when the movement for Catalan independence was not deemed to have enough support to drive political change, the dystopian film and novel El complot dels anells recreated the possibility that a group of pro-independence activists would organise into an armed gang, with great support from the citizenship. They would conspire to dismantle the security system of the Barcelona Olympic Stadium, kidnap three hundred journalists and demand, in exchange for their release, the recognition of Catalonia as a sovereign country in Europe. This article offers a contextualised and critical reading of the novel El complot dels anells within the parameters of the representations of violence and space.
