Abstract

This study analyzes the attitudes and discourses around death that were raised in Tucumán (Argentina) in 1886-1887, as a consequence of the cholera epidemic that burst in that province The experience of anonymous and uncharacterized death, and the chaos that a pest causes, aroused an alteration of human relationships, breaking up the social fabric The religious imagery that this event shows is investigated in journalistic sources, of cial documents and chronicles of that time An effort is made to nd those who are responsible for the pest and means are assayed to escape death and the sorrows of “the world beyond ” The protagonists of these events had the conviction that the “cholera morbus” was in fact “divine anger” and they also possessed beliefs nurtured in the biblical tradition that encouraged them to restore the warp of broken solidarity
