Abstract

More often than not, in the literature that deals with the historical turmoil of the early 20th century Mexico, we find politicians, intellectuals and clergymen statements in which they point at the nun Concepción Acevedo de la Llata as responsible of making up the scheme to assassinate Álvaro Obregón, the winner in the presidential elections of 1928. In this article, it is our point to prove that those accusations are untrue. In the midst of a vicious war between the Catholic Church and the Mexican State, a religious faction: the Liga Nacional Defensora de la Libertad Religiosa, set up the plot. So as to accomplish its goal, the group resorted to fanatical religiosity, and José de León Toral pulled the trigger. In order to wipe out the intellectual trace of such murder, top religious officials blamed the nun.
