To defi ne a discourse as a «representation» implies the possible existence of other visions of the same reality, to which the analysis usually contrasts those representations. Nevertheless, this «reality» can only be apprehended on the basis of theoretical frameworks, tools and mental categories that, in their turn, constitute one representation among others. On the basis of studies carried out in indigenous communities of lowland Bolivia, the present article discusses the pertinence and limits of anthropological classifi cations and categories, particularly the identifi cation that is commonly made between language and culture.
