The healthy and the ill. The comsumptin of wines and the social problems of alcoholism in Montevideo in the 19th century

In Uruguay there is a growing drug use that is leading to confl icts visible in work accidents, traffi c and escalation of domestic violence and crime. This issue is considered a matter of state and surveys denote that alcohol is the fi rst drug of initiation, which includes the intake of wine. Medicine and morality have combined since the beginning of the twentieth century ruling the consumption ratio of «healthy» or «excessive» of alcohol. In this atmosphere of growing hygienism also developed the wine industry. In this article we attempt to question the medical discourse through medical records and police detention spaces (hospitals and prisons) in Montevideo.Downloads
