Public morals and the State in Paraguay during the mid-19th century

In this article, we discuss the character of the Paraguayan State in the mid-19th century, tracing its administrative and socio-cultural policies through State regulations, court cases and demographic data. We analyse President Carlos Antonio López’s attempt to rebuild the power of the Church and make it an important agent of his intentions to strengthen the patriarchal state. His ob jective of improving the “public morals” and sexual behaviour of the population was not, however, very successful. High numbers of illegitimate children and fe male-headed households do not, on the other hand, contradict the patriarchal character of Paraguayan family structures and society.
