Abstract

The classic theory models of the spatial economy localization are based in the reduction of the concept of space to its distance-time dimension, and consequently, to the cost of transportation, which lead to legitimate the deterministic relation between transportation and economic development. Such has been the orientation of public policies regarding transportation in Brazil. The work, once it brings forth the space concept along with its social, historic and economic attributes, deals with the complexity of the metropolitan socio-spatial structure in a more trustworthy way, considering the transportation system as one of the vectors to the comprehension of the metropolitan evolution of Rio de Janeiro. It focuses the concentration/deconcentration processes of the metropolitan nucleus and the growth of the peripheral cities, inserted in a cumulative logic of urban segregation which points to the maintenance of socioeconomic inequalities, observed both in the confrontation between the nucleus and the periphery and within the metropolitan periphery.
