Military teaching and geographical knowledge production in 19th Century Brazil

Abstract

In the 19th century, the profissionalization of occident armies influenced in the consolidation of military education as well on the professinal activities of military officers. The tecnological advance speed up an important changes in the warlike activities,causing an important impact in military corporation and different function for each arm used as well as necessities of a better education for the officers. In the independent countries of america,the armies had suffered the effect from this process, claiming for changes in the equipment,the tactics and the domain of a new kind of knoweledge. Although the difficulties experienced by the Brasilian’s army in this process of constitution, related on slavery social order, they also searched the modernization.The officers who had assumed that direction were strongly envolved in this developing process of the necessary knowledge for domaining the national territory.In the research that we carried through having as main documentary corpus the reports of the Empires’ Minister of war,we focus as an intellectual field.In the present research paper,we will present the production of geographic knowledge existing in the interior of the corporation, analyzed in this military officer’s relation formation.
