Abstract

From the end of 18th century throughout the 19th century a series of quarantine establishments were developed in Canada and in the United States. Those lazarettos, were heavily based in the romantic, naturalistic and landscapist ideas that began to germinate at this time in the field of urbanism. In this text, these ideas are analyzed and put in relation with the Canadian lazarettos, mainly with the Grosse-Île one. Since this quarantine station was the main gateway to Canada throughout the 19th century, making it our main focus of study would give us a precise depiction about the different approaches regarding the epidemics prevention in Canada.
