Abstract

Urban growth and transformations in the location of economic activity in A Coruña, 1914-1935. The process of physical growth undergone by the city of La Coruña and the transformations experienced by the location of economic activities (industrial and tertiary) during the first third of the twentieth century are analyzed. The data collected in the population censuses, the nomenclátor, and the industrial and commercial tax (contribución industrial y de comercio) have been used. In order to comprehend the variations in the spatial distribution of the firms two dates were selected, at the beginning and the end of the period studied (1914 and 1935), aiming to determine the changes in the medium term in location of urban economic activity. A dichotomy in location patterns has been identified, due to the coexistence of traditional and advanced patterns, as a result of the socio-economic modernization of the city.
