Abstract

This article’s issue concerns the recent growth, in number, of closed condominiums in the mountainous regions of Espírito Santo, in the southeast of Brazil. Located near Vitória, the capital of the state, this region has been colonized by Germans and Italian that make their living out of small “family agriculture”. These people’s farming has been threatened by the new spatial pattern that has been valorizing the whole area due to the current expansion of the real-state interest in building new closed condominiums in the whereabouts. Alliances has been made with the local producers' association along with environmentalists aiming to promote the increase of the debate regarding the regions’ sustenance. (The area mentioned above provides all the water consumed in the whole region of Vitória, the capital, and its neighboring cities). This debate may contribute to delimit the boundaries to the expansion of the extinctive real-stating activities in that region.
