Abstract

The metropolis, in its modern sense, emerge in the twentieth century, as a new form of territorial organization of the city that spreads around the world. Not exactly as the object of investigations of this work, we will problematize different processes, approaches and perspectives (including methodological) and with them the scale and focus of analysis, to which they are associated, that are understood by some authors as "counter-urbanization" in near areas of these contemporary metropolises. It will be exposed, though, first, a reflection that takes as its main subject the "moving boundaries" of these cities and, at the end of the essay, some brief observations about this process in the case of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro.
