State and transport network in Goiás-Brazil (1889-1950)

Abstract

In the late nineteenth century the settlement in Goiás was dispersed and the localizations were forced by strict relations with other areas along the country. Creating conditions so the national economic reached goianas border lands meant that the creation of a state and the constitution of a legal framework might be followed by an infrastructure that allowed to connect different areas of production and consumption. This way, transport networks were important to connect other Goiás areas with the country, especially with Brazil southeast. This article examines these issues in order to show the relationship between political and technical training of the railway in Goiás Therefore, we discuss the state concepts and its role for the formation of goiano space analyzing the relationship between politics, economics and social actors an how the railroad influenced Goiás spatial organization in the first half of the twentieth century.
