Abstract

The talasonymy of Majorca’s South is a reflection of the perception, cognition, spatial relationship and the geo-linguistic characteristics manifested by sailors in the area. The place names of the sea that have been compiled from interviews with professional and recreational fishermen of the main harbours of Majorca’s south are analyzed, making possible to form a set of names of the maritime fisheries located in the south of the island and also a mental map of the fishermen of that region. The resulting map is the contribution to geographical knowledge of this important maritime sector at the same time that the keys that allow us to explain the origin and the correct interpretation are analyzed.
