Abstract

Most of the works analyzing property rights in historical perspective, usually consider private property as an immovable system of rights along the time. Opposite to this interpretation, this paper analyze the establishment and evolution of rules applying to private forest in Spain in the long run, and consider it as an expression of changes in the right system associated to private property. The work describes the main changes in the rules in the 19th century, in the first decades of the 20th century and during the Francois period. Then it discus some of its effects and launch some hypothesis of work. The main conclusion is that the process of economic development implied changes in the uses of territory and in resources exploitation and required a continuous adjustment in property rights which affected also to private property.
