Abstract

The creation of new states and the geographical expansion of the capital are processes directly linked to each other. Moreover, in Brazil, we note process particularities due to being a country whose territory is not entirely built. In order to understand this link, we will study the legislative decree projects dealing with the creation of new states, which are presently discussed at the National Congress. We will draw a political map of Brazil which will underline the projects in analyse. The latter deal with the creation of eight states and five federal territories. The incorporation of new spaces creates new opportunities of capital accumulation, resulting in the geographical expansion of the capital – encouraged and controlled by the State– which drives the creation of new states. Therefore, a new state is a cause and a consequence of this expansion.
