Abstract

Spanish cities are in a crisis that is global in its dimension but have very different local manifestations. One of the main is the strong increase in registered unemployment, showing uneven growth rates in terms of the vulnerability of each territory, raising the importance of the path dependence and local characteristics, both to interpret the specific impact of the economic crisis as to pose responses that enable urban regeneration. This article offers a brief theoretical reflection about these issues. It analyzes what occurred in the metropolitan area of Madrid and focuses on the differences between the districts and neighbourhoods of the capital, proposing a typology and looking for possible associations between unemployment and a number of indicators of socio-economic vulnerability
