Abstract

Marine Extractive Reserves are Brazilian conservation territories that aim to democratize access to the natural resources, through participatory management. Considering the social representations of users and dwellers vis-à-vis this new institution is essential in order to promote sound projects to use and value the natural resources. In the Caeté-Taperaçu Reserve, Amazonian littoral, 262 persons were interviewed about their expectations, government roles, local life and livelihood and potential for collective action. Expectations are high and they are motivated to change unsustainable practices. Despite these prospects, the social construction of the territory is complex, involving deliberation processes that oppose the historical context of top-down relations between state and communities
