Abstract

Very few works located in Catalonia and adopting a quantitative perspective analyze the construction of multiple self-identifications and their interrelations in the case of migrants, as well as the explanatory power of the self-identification with Spain and the area of origin on the self-identification with Catalonia. This is enhanced by including in the analysis the impact of the generational cohort and a comparison with the "autochthonous". Precisely the analysis of these dynamics is the main objective of this article. The results are based on the analysis of a questionnaire applied to a total of 1074 youths of 14-16 years in Catalonia (437 migrants and 637 "autochthonous"). Key findings point to the great analytical power of self-identifications, the differences between "autochthonous” and migrants, the minimal interaction of identifying the area of origin in the analyzed processes and differences depending on the cohort.
