Abstract

The installation and development of gas networks was inserted in the modernization process of Lisboa and Barcelona in the XIXth Century. Whith its differentiated characteristics, these infrastuctures applied to both cities presented some similarities and differences which we consider essentials. The period studied extents from the industrial process beginnings in both cities to its later development until the 1970’s. We will present the gas networks trajectory in reference to a wide range of questions, as the response of gas companies in front of the entry of electricity in the urban energy market and the circonstances created by the supeditation of both countries to the coals, necessaries for gas elaboration. At the same time, we will give some explanations about the private consumption of gas. In this study we will explain, as well, some entrepreneurial behaviour manifested in order to articulate the networks in the most favourable manner for its interests by the competence or by the collaboration; but always in search of the major capacity for the networks expansion in the urban territory.
