From the participatory budget to the mega-projects: the production of urban space in Porto Alegre in the XXI century

Abstract

The article deals with the production of urban space in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil in the first decade of the 21st century. After a large period of urban govern which have experienced participatory forms of management that became the city a world model, nowadays Porto Alegre through out several changes where one form of corporate governance of urban space is increasingly dominant. In this sense, the article presents some of the mega-projects in operation in the city presenting its promoters and strategies of action. In conclusion we discuss if the way to a more private than public planning is irreversible in the city which was known as the world capital of citizen participation.
