Abstract

We will try to analyse the phenomenon of femenine bigamy in Colonial Mexico. Through the Inquisition trials against two women and a man involved in the double marriage of one of these women, we can investigate about their experiences and behaviour and study the aspects and attitudes (of the accused of this offence and of the Tribunal), attitudes which led to the transgression of a Catholic rule. It seemed appropiate to fucus on the historic as well as geographical context of this transgression since it involved a Spaniard, a Mestiza and a Mulatto slave). Also we will consider the search for the American ideal in an "imaginary" of liberty.
