Abstract

Mountain have no part in the interest of scientist until the second half part of the XVIIIth century. Among Humboldt's contributions to scientific knowledge, we have to consider the discovery of mountain. But he wasn't an original forerunner in this topic. He followed the path that Jean Jacques Rousseau or Horace Bénédict de Saussure had traced before. In this paper we want to show the importance of mountain research to the development of natural sciences, and to emphasize the Humboldt's contribution to it. It wasn't only the discovery of a natural scientist, but also of a romantic soul
