Spatial distribution of hailstorms in the northern sector of the Mendoza Province

Abstract

Although hailstorms are one of the most significant factors affecting agriculture in Mendoza, its spatial distribution across the Province is unknown. In this study, we used non-conventional sources of information to complement the scarce instrumental record available on hailstorms in the region. Based on qualitative information gathered by non-specialized observers, and compiled by local newspapers (Diario Los Andes), we classified the occurrence and intensity of the storms. The spatial extension of the storms is finally represented at regional scales using political districts or departments as cartographic units.
