The migratory process in the extreme west of Paraná’s State/Brazil with the construction of the Itaipu hidroelectric power plant

Abstract

The project of the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, located in Paraná River, between Brazil and Paraguay Republics were initiated at 1970’s, and in October of 1982, with the dam formation, it flooded a area of 1.350 kilometres squares. The property of the farmers’s families from the area, was expropriate and migrated compulsorily. The biggest part of them went to urban areas of district and cities that compound the region, others went to country side of the same state and to states Center-West and North of the country; and a third group bought lands sheaper in the Republic of Paraguay. With the migration process, the territority of each individual and of the community fragmented due to expropriation of the space of each one these individual and part of the area.
