The modernization of the headquarters system in the city of Barcelona: from the fortification´s destruction (1854) to the 1936´s Civil War

Abstract

The transformations of the most european cities in the XIX century, produced the renovation of headquarters for the new military needings settled by the destruction of the fortifications and the growing of the urban space. In this article we analize the modernization process of Barcelona´s headquarters, inside the spanish special context, which was started in the 1860´s, after the wall´s destruction, and not finished until the end of the Primo de Rivera´s dictatorship (1923-1930). This process settled the movement of the headquarters to the edge of the city, keeping in the historical centre only this instalations, such as the Militar Goverment and the General Intendence of the region, which was demanded by his importance, and it was caracterized by the economic problems and the imposibility to did it until the creation of the "Junta Mixta de Urbanización y Acuartelamiento de Barcelona".
