The Landscape's science in the Russian Geography

Abstract

The Landscape' science has appeared in Russia between the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth century. Its specific features were determinated both by the original development of the Russian geography and by the history of appropriation of the « virgin lands » by the Russian State. How and why has appeared the concept of landscape ? How has contributed the schools of Russian geography to the evolution of the notion of landscape ? In what do consist the epistemological problems of this new conception ? This article deals with the epistemology of the geographical models of landscape in the contexts of cultural, social and political conditions of Russia in the years 1860-1920.
