Abstract

The main objective of this working paper is to apply the concept of societal security –developed by Barry Buzan and the Copenhagen School at the end of 80s – to the migration flows. With that purpose, the chosen geographical area is the Mediterranean one with a special attention to the migration flows from the Maghreb area towards the EU. Our point of departure is the evolution of the concept of security that following the last developments of international politics has been incorporating in its agenda new issues arriving to multidimensionality. Among those issues there are some that reflect clearly the new demands of international society as environment and identity. In the working paper we also take account of the EU position about migration, analysing its last actions.
