Abstract

When Santa Cruz de Tenerife is appointed as the capital of the only province of the Canaries in 1833, La Laguna sees its expectations frustrated and occupies a new position in the insular urban network. This process, originated at the end of the 18th century, leads to a demographic and urban relaxation which continues throughout the 19th century. In spite of this, La Laguna makes a considerable effort to modernize its infrastructure, refurbishing the old houses at the same time. By the end of the century, the town, transformed into the center of the region, reveals evident signs of urban recovery which became more specific in the first decades of the 19th century.
