Civil engineers in the urban transformation of Spanish cities at the end of the XIXth century. The case of Barcelona

Abstract

In the second half of the XIXth century, many Spanish cities suffered an urban transformation in order to improve their habitability conditions. In those transformation civil engineers had a main presence. The differences between civil engineers and architects, due to the difficulty to establish a border their professional competences, was present. In the case of Barcelona, civil engineers activity, from the technical structure of the city council, allowed an active participation in the enlargement and sanitation of the city: Cerdà and García Faria were the key names for a study of civil engineers.
