Abstract

In 1765 the city of Orizaba, in central México, was designated villa cosechera by the Real Renta del Tabaco. Since then, the Nicotiana tabacum became a fundamental issue for the economic and urban life of the city. During the Nineteeth century, the organization of labor around the cultivation of tobacco continued to be very important in the definition of the most powerful social group with influence on the urban space of Orizaba.
