The engineering and the project of Monturiol's Ictíneo, 1857-1868

Abstract

Narcís Monturiol (1819-1885) carried out his project on submarine navigation (Ictíneo) between 1857 and 1868. This was an engineering development which it showed the interaction of empirical technicians with the new engineers trained in schools. We have seek to analyse the origins of Monturiol’s ideas and the role of his ideology and his vocation for invention and science. Monturiol organized first a team of practical technicians, which subsequently incorporated a naval architect and a industrial engineering graduated. The project ended with the destruction of the Ictíneos. We describe the general characteristics of the project and its significance in the XIXth century Catalonia.
