Abstract

This piece of research has as its object the faculty union of Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro during the period in which the country"s redemocratization occurred, i.e., more precisely between the establishment of Adur-RJ (1979) and of Andes-SN (1981). At the universities, just as in the rest of the public sector, mobilizations against the military dictatorship took place along with the proposal for organizing faculty, workers, and students associations. In a way, those aspirations reflected the changes occurrend at the universities, as well as in the faculty profile. The professor position, i.e., the elitist formalism gave way to an increase in the number of professors and students, increasingly approaching the professors to the common claims on the part of the other workers. This article is organized into two chapters; the first one deals with the establishment of Adur-RJ, and the second one deals with the struggle against the arbitrariness within the university.
