Abstract

This paper makes use of secondary data and a literature review to analyse the emergence of a new labour market in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil - which is, since the 1980s, related to the growth of tourism - and considers the relevance of government policies in this field. As a result of these policies, tourism now constitutes one of the main economic activities in the state, not only because of the amount of government revenues but mainly for its significance for the labour market. However, attached to tourism expansion, there emerged some contradictory outcomes such as the informalization of the labour market and the worsening of labour conditions.
