Abstract

In Brazil, the housing cooperatives play important role in the reduction of the housing deficit that, in agreement with most of the statistics, it is of 10 million people. In that sense, the objective of this paper was to identify and to evaluate successful experiences of housing cooperatives. Three cooperatives were analyzed: HousingCooperative Moradada Praia (COOPMORAR), HousingCooperative of SemTeto de Santa Maria Norte (COSTESAM) and HousingCooperative of Nascente do Vale (COOPHEVA). The researched cooperatives presented relevant aspects as the existence of a paternalism that influences in their creation and in their development for the part of representation institutions and public institutions, or for the part of their leaders, and the need that the public power offers infrastructure, safety, health and conditions for the people to have a worthy life in their houses. The results showed that even before many problems, the cooperatives have been getting to accomplish their objectives.
