Abstract

Based on the concepts of residential segregation the article analyses the fundamental changes in Santiago de Chile and in the City of Mexico during the past decades. The analysis focuses on the particular role of politics for the production of specific forms of segregation. In this context the relation between socio-economic transformation and the particular changes in the policy-fields of urban planning and housing policies are analysed. The article focuses on the question whether and how the policies applied during the 1980s and 1990s contributed to an increase of socio-spatial polarisation or fragmentation. The article contributes to the discussion about the role of structures, institutions and social actors for the production of the urban spaces. Based upon these concepts and the concrete analysis developed in the article a more accurate analysis of possibilities of alternative and more sustainable developments should be enabled.
