Abstract

The predominance of academicist and theoretical geography in Spain has been reversed over the last two decades, and has been replaced by a growing preponderance of a practical, applied view of geography. In this way, geography is not only deprived of its scientific essence -for theory and practice should be inseparable-, but is also plunged into an excessively pragmatic, utilitarian activity, away from society and serving the interests of the ruling groups. The social role of geography lies in its power to solve problems; this requires establishing permanent relationship with the users of geographical research. However, so far there has been close contact and exchange with firms and the Government, but not with other social organizations which are better placed to perceive the real concerns of people.
