Abstract

The professional structure of a tertiary town: A Coruña, 1900-1960. The evolution of working population and other linked demographic parameters are analyzed, in order to assess which was the dominant professional structure, and the possible transformations of the urban economic activity. The main point is to demonstrate the predominance of tertiary activities upon the industrial and primary ones, as a part of a long-run consolidation process of the sector. Despite the growth of the tertiary sector, we appreciate a certain dualism, which came from the strong presence of low qualification service activities (domestic service, retail, etc.), as opposed to other more sophisticated functions, linked to the traffic generated by the main responsible of the local economic activity, the port.
