Abstract

The new information and communication technologies are the expression of a movement from the "disciplinary society" to the "society of control", a different social order. Now, the classic representation of power, grounded in the idea of the unidirectional panoptic doesn't serve to explain the way in which the surveillance is exercised. The police and policing have had to adopt new technologies, in accordance with the new rationality. Next to worries and discussions that the tension between the effectiveness of the new technologies in the field of security and the legitimacy of their use has generated, the adoption of new technologies has other consequences.
