Abstract

This paper analyzes the process of Mexico City’s growth, covering a territory considered as “the paradigm of popular urbanization during the nineties”: The Chalco Valley. We study this process from the viewpoint of the subjects who are main actors: the inhabitants. Particularly, we are interested by the spatial subjectivity orienting them during the process of social construction of place. Inside the social subjectivity, we are focusing on the “homeownership’s myth”. In the last part, we are dealing with the articulation of this myth with the dwelling forms in the periphery, evidencing two ideal types: the first being an utopian and retreated dwelling form, and the other one sustained on atopian refused.
