Abstract

The arrival of the railway to the city of Barcelona in 1848 caused a series of deep changes in the urban structure of the city and brought about, partly, the following development of the Barcelonian Ensanche designed by Ildefonso Cerdá. From 1860, the appearance of new railway companies and their later commercial fusions ended in the creation and modification of railway spaces and layouts, which were not always adapted to the Cerda's project and which affected the development of the city's system of communication, generating a series of marginal spaces in some of which, the phenomenon of the "shack villages" made its appearance.
