Abstract

The present work aimed to introduce a new methodological proposal for the construction of valley longitudinal profiles based on Google EarthTM data. To illustrate the procedure, the profile of the Aguapeí River valley - São Paulo State, Brazil, was constructed and posteriorly assessed with the channel morphometry to verify its influence over the river shapes. In order to validate such a profile, a comparative analysis was established with a valley longitudinal profile elaborated by means of data acquired in a GIS environment. The results demonstrated the high reliability of the Google Earth™ elevation data for the construction of mesoscale valley profiles. In addition, the elaboration of the profile based on this virtual globe led to gains in operability, which facilitates the reapplication of the proposal in other study sites.
