Abstract

In any society, democratization calls for the establishment of the necessary conditions so that citizenship is fully exercised. The implementation of civil rights and political participation demands respect for the right of free expression as well as the existence of a media system which guarantees a minimum balance in the forming of public opinion and voice. The whole set of social roles of communication and journalism is going through a crisis which, thought specific to the field, is connected to the more general crisis of representative democracy. The economic globalization has accelerated systemic change both in the sphere of democracy and in the area of the social roles of communication. Most of the changes which have taken place in the field of communication have seriously damaged the quality of democratic life, in a process that, after Charles Tilly, we shall term as dedemocratization of society.
