La “thesis of secularization” coincided with the metaphor of the «death of God» in predicting the irremissible vanishing of religion from the public and political spheres of modern societies. Three grand trends added up in this prolonged historical process: the restriction of religion to the private sphere; the rationalization of all remaining theological elements; and their substitution for ideologies and secular “grand narratives”. Despite this, from the 1970s on, a new historical trend manifests itself, one which agrees with the metaphor of “the revenge of God” highlighting the powerful and conflictive return of religion to the public-political sphere. Here, we analyze the context, causes and consequences of such relevant and, at the same time, unexpected evolution.
