For decades, the political, economic and social situation of Colombia caused the migration of the country’s citizens towards Venezuelan territory, a phenomenon which only accentuated with the armed conflict. Venezuela, which was characterized as an immigrant-receiving country since the 1950s, ceased to be an attractive destination from the 1980s on, due to the economic and political crisis that it went through. It was at that time when the first waves of Venezuelan migrants could be seen. But it is from 2015 on when there is evidence of an increase in Venezuelan migration as a consequence of the deepening of the political, economic and social crisis experienced by the country’s society and the impoverishment of the living conditions of a large part of its population; This situation has turned Colombia into the closest and most accessible immigration option for Venezuelans in search of opportunities.
