Conflicts in the African Great Lakes’ Region. Their impact on the migration movements in Rwanda (1959-2017)

Abstract

Migrants and refugees play an important role in development and democratization processes, but also in the conflicts in their countries of origin. In particular, refugees in the Great Lakes’ region have constituted one of the main security problems in the area. In the case of Rwanda, the 1959 Revolution led to the first wave of the Rwandese exiles. Since then, the struggles for power have not ceased to cause death and thousands of Rwandese refugees. The War of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (former Tutsi refugees) against the Habyarimana regime ended with the 1994 Tutsi genocide, where millions of people lost their lives and many thousands of Rwandans exiled themselves to neighbouring countries or to Europe. After the genocide, the number of Rwandans living abroad as political refugees has risen. This situation of forced refugees is explained by the conflicts that have taken place in this area of the Great Lakes in recent years.
