Abstract

Technical innovation serving the narrative. From Citizen Kane on, Orson Welles' work condensed previous film knowledge into his very own handful of new techniques. Important among these is his use of light, for cinema may lack scenery, wardrobe, actors or script, but not light. Deep focus, texture, contrast..., are lighting elements that Welles and his cinematographers masterly used in order to give effectiveness to the narrative. His black and white filmography, considered separately because of its technical specificities, is paradigmatic in its panoply of cinema techniques, not per se, but rather as a tool for better story-telling.
