Abstract

This paper gives an interpretation of Edgar Neville’s Neville La torre de los siete jorobados (1944) as a good example of a particular re-configuration and conception of the narration of the history of Spain, especially of its very beginnings in relation with the creation of an identity (old Christian) and the condemnation and rejection of those non-assimilated (Moriscos, Jews and Marranos).
Within an apparently naive appearance and some features that reminds German Expressionism, Neville’s film offers several fundamental questions not only for understanding this specific catholic-conservative historical conception, but also for deconstructing it and for an opening to a historical plurality.
