Historical cinema in Spain did not have any relevance until post-Civil War years, when a series of protectionist measures encouraged the filming of big-budgeted costume dramas in a similar line to other countries such as the United States, Italy or Germany. The greatest efforts —artistic as well as economic— were produced between 1942 and 1953. The main purpose of this essay is to assess the contributions of these films to the development and improvement of set design in Spanish cinema.
Keywords: Spanish historical cinema, francoism, set design, art directors.
